This is great fun. The story is told in Nürnberg that a young man requested the hand of a young lady. The girl's father, unimpressed, said "no." The next day, this statue appeared in the town square, having been made by the suitor to impress the girls father. As fantastic as the structure is, what impressed the father is the ring that is fashioned into the fence. There is no evidence that either the ring or the fence had to be mended in any way--the solid ring remains in the fence to this day. Turning the ring in the fence brings good luck for one year. We both turned the ring, so our luck expires October 24, 2009.
